Tarun Tahiliani encapsulates the modern, discerning Asian bride, and is known for steering Indian bridal couture into a new direction. His brand showcases the ‘here and now’, while simultaneously being deeply rooted in India’s heritage of draped form and tradition of artistry. Khush Wedding discovers the quintessential techniques of his craftsmanship, as he shares his expertise in dressing the quintessential bride.

How can a bride combine tradition with modernity?
If you are a millennial bride, you are already a combination of someone who is deep-rooted in your traditions but is aware of the world around you, and in tune with the one that resides within you. To give an outfit a modern language, I suggest wearing structured drapes. For example, one can have the most elaborate and intricately detailed lehenga, but with a structured dupatta contouring the body, your movement can be hassle-free and you can glide freely.

You’ve always been a fan of pale colours, why have you branched out into multi-coloured hues?
Pastel hues are sophisticated and timeless but we have always maintained a broad spectrum of colours too. With our Couture’19 collection, we played with saturated jewel tones and celebratory colours. This is why we called the collection ‘Bloom’ because we blossomed into a palette, both metaphorically and literally.

What type of jewellery complements your designs the best?
Jewellery is very critical. Not only because it makes or breaks a look, but because the ask for it has changed significantly in the recent past. Some keep it minimalistic, while others are ready to keep it as the most prominent piece in the whole look. It depends on the individual’s taste, but my favourite is the striking play of real stones in contrast to the outfit.

What are your trend predictions for brides-to-be in 2020?
Women these days are so clear and precise -I love it! The hope is that brides pick outfits that let them move, swirl and dance freely. In terms of a ‘dream outfit’ a bride who knows herself, can know at first sight if an outfit is the one for her.
